THE BRANDENBURG PRINCIPAL STUD AND STATE STUD OF NEUSTADT AN DER DOSSE

As a consequence of German reunification, the stallion depot and the herd of mares were also integrated, more or less establishing the principal and state stud of Neustadt an der Dosse which had been founded by Frederick William II in 1788 a second time, on a terrain of 400 ha, one of the largest state stud facilities of Germany. During the original foundation period, stallions initially came from Trakehnen, Hanover, Mecklenburg and France. The duke of Lindenau, who had been authorised with the reorganisation of the Prussian stud system felt that these horses were not noble enough, so that he imported a considerable number of thoroughbreds and Arabians. Next to Bayan, his son Pretender and Mocraby, the Arabian stallion Turkmainatti, a present from the Austrian state chancellor Kaunitz to the German King, attained the greatest importance. In the middle of the 19th century, thoroughbred stallions were mainly utilised. There were even 36 gallop racers in training around 1845 and two years later, the first horse race took place on the studfarm property. In 1876, the stud was closed by the Prussian House of Representatives with the thoroughbreds going to Graditz and Beberbeck.

Following experiments with draught horses, heavy warm-bloods, Arabs and thoroughbreds were once more utilised, this time upon the directions of Kaiser Wilhelm II, who anticipated obtaining better 3-5 year old stallions for his hussars by this means. During count Siegfried von Lehndorff's period of office, powerful large sized stallions were utilised, whereas later on, East Prussian horses and Hanoverians were increasingly applied. Dr. Heling, who was the state master of horses as of 1930, fetched the East Prussians Ataman and Praetor to Neustadt and through his intercession, the Hanoverians Duell I and II came to Neustadt after the Second World War.
The last state master of horses, Wilhelm Gützel, capitulated just like the German Armed Forces (Wehrmacht): In the summer of 1945, the Red Army loaded all the horses and everything that was not nailed down, into vehicles headed east, to the Soviet Union.

Gustav Condereit proved to be a "hunter and gatherer" in the difficult post-war period and with the approval of the Soviet Military Command, searched the whole county for suitable broodmares and stallions to establish a new breed and breeding programme. The dissolution of all the state studs of East Germany in the year 1953 was followed shortly afterwards by the establishment of three stallion depots: Neustadt, Moritzburg and Redefin.
The commencement of operations of the "Central East German Sales Stables (Zentrale Verkaufsstall der DDR) in Neustadt in 1971 was partly motivated by the promise of hard Western currency. Under the direction of Heinz Hoppe, Trakehner stallions were increasingly utilised, including Neumond, Drusus and Sturmwind.

The nobly bred Hanoverianan Adept, whose lineage leads from Archimedes and Lateran/Tr. proved to be a veritable upgrader of the breed and founded a stallion dynasty of his own that is still flourishing today.

He more or less became the saviour of this bloodline, upholding it and ensuring its survival via the 1979 born Kolibri, who derived from Kobold I and was titled the "Landgraf of the East". Four of his sons belong to the current population of state stallions at this stud. The first class herd of broodmares comprises around 30 to 40 head and primarily serves the breeding of potential state stallions, with progeny that are not utilised for breeding being sold as riding horses.
