THE RADEGAST-PRUSSENDORF STATE STUD OF SAXONY-ANHALT

In 1612 Radegast was first mentioned as a state property of the dukedom of Anhalt-Dessau. It was acquired by the Prussian state at the beginning of the twentieth century and in 1929 it became the experimental farm of the University of Halle-Wittenberg. Initially, heavy warmblood sires from Oldenburg and East Friesland were utilised, which increasingly however had to make way for stallions from Hanover with which the warmblood breed was built up from 1951 onwards. With the purchase of numerous mares from the original breeding region, the emphasis was placed on their suitability as agricultural draught horses. Concurrently, diverse stallions were bought in Hanover, including Griff I by Glimmer, Dornkaat by Dömitz I, Fridolin by Friesenkönig, Feierabend by Feiertag III, Julier by Julius Cäsar xx and Kurfürst by Kurier. Following the transformation of the training and experimental studfarm to a state owned stud in 1969 and the stocking up of the stock of mares to in excess of 100 head, competition sports horses were exclusively bred from then onwards.
Apart from stallions of strong Hanoverian weighting from Neustadt-Dosse, including Sekundant by Senatus, Duktus by Duell II and Draufgänger by Drusus, the Hanoverian Leuchtfeuer by Lugano I, who was vigorous up to a ripe old age, exerted the greatest influence. He produced 18 approved sons and more than 100 registered mares.

Julier was also able to establish his own bloodline via the grey stallion Jerome II, who in addition made a name for himself as a producer of highly decorated mares. Of the thoroughbreds that were utilised for breeding purposes, the handsome Graditz stallion Ambro xx deserves special mention. Radegast with which the training and experimental studfarm of Prussendorf was affiliated in 1970, produced more than 100 approved stallions and numerous elite mares and state premium mares in the former East Germany.
Following German reunification, the state parliament decided to maintain Radegast and Prussendorf respectively, as state institutions. In 1993, the state stud was established and two years later the state riding and driving school was founded.

THE RADEGAST-PRUSSENDORF STATE STUD OF SAXONY-ANHALT

Of the approximately 25 stallions currently stationed there, the Hanoverian World Cup III by Woermann and the Verden stallion approvals winner Fontainebleu by Wanderer are especially significant, Donnerhall and Rubinstein progeny are however also represented in the stock of stallions.

Great expectations have been placed in two horses bred in Saxony-Anhalt, Kolibris As by Kolibri and Justizrat by Jupiter II, the latter deriving from the line of Julius Cäsar xx.
Radegast is the testing centre riding horse stallions (100 day test) but pony stallions and warm-blooded mares also absolve their performance tests there.
